Perceived Weight Gain Among Adolescents Using Contraception

      In the US, 3 out of every 10 adolescent females will become pregnant prior to age 20, which has negative health and economic consequences and increases health care costs. Long-acting reversible methods of contraception (intrauterine devices (IUDs) and etonogestrel (ENG) implant) are first-line methods in adolescents due to their ability to significantly decrease unintended pregnancy. Perceived weight gain can influence choices about use of contraception and continuation. The aim of this study is to examine the perceived weight changes associated with adolescent use of contraception. We hypothesized that more adolescents using depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and the ENG implant would perceive weight gain than users of combined hormonal contraceptives or the copper IUD.
