17. Factors Associated with Early Removal of the Etonogestrel Implant for Bothersome Bleeding in Adolescents

The etonogestrel implant is the most effective method of birth control with a 0.5% failure rate in the first year. Despite this, almost half of women discontinue the implant because of method dissatisfaction, often due to bothersome vaginal bleeding. Prior studies have been small and not focused on adolescents and young adults. Our objective was to identify medical and demographic factors that are predictive of early ( < 12 months of use) removal of the implant due to bothersome bleeding in adolescents.
